Trump displays 2,000 members of the National Guard after Los Angeles immigration protests

The Trump administration is calling the California National Guard in response to protests in Los Angeles for immigration operations that have resulted in some clashes between protesters and authorities.

President Donald Trump signed a memorandum “deploying 2,000 national guards to address illegality” in California as the manifestations opposed by immigration and customs compliance operations continue in the state, said the White House Secretary of the White House, Karoline Leavitt, in a statement on Saturday.

“Following this violence, the insignificant democratic leaders of California have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens,” Leavitt said. “That is why President Trump has signed a presidential memorandum that deployed 2,000 national guards to address the illegality that has been allowed to be festive,” Leavitt said.

Previously, the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, said that the Federal Government was moving to “take over the California National Guard”, calling the measure “on an inflammatory” and saying that “it will only increase tensions.”

Earlier at night, Trump said in a publication on social networks that if California legislators cannot “do their job”, then the federal government “will intervene and solve the problem,” but did not provide specific details.

Saturday’s protests focused on the city of Paramount in Los Angeles County, after reports from an immigration raid that occurs in that place. However, the mayor of Paramount, Peggy Lemons, later said during a press conference that the agents were organizing, without raid.

These protests followed demonstrations on Friday that arrived as a result of immigration application operations throughout the city. The great crowds gathered near the Federal Building on Friday afternoon and night, which led to some clashes with the authorities.

The department of the Los Angeles County Sheriff said that his staff responded to Paramount Boulevard on Saturday, where a large crowd was blocking the street.

“As the deputies arrived, it seemed that the agents of the federal law were in the area, and that the members of the public were gathering to protest. The department of the Sheriff was not involved in any federal operation or federal action of application of the law and responded only for the management of traffic control and multitudes,” said the Sheriff’s department in a statement on Saturday.

The Sheriff’s department said it does not participate in any civil immigration application activity or mass deportation sweeps.

“We remind the public to exercise their right to protest peacefully, regarding the safety of all community members. Our main responsibility is to guarantee public safety for all people present, both protesters, residents and spectators, addressing possible security concerns while supporting the safe and legal expression of the rights of the first amendment,” said the Sheriff’s department.

The response to protests has local and federal officials indicating the fingers.

In a statement on Saturday, the interim director of ICE Todd Lyons criticized local officials, including the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, and the Police for their response to the situation on Friday night.

“What happened yesterday in Los Angeles was terrible,” Lyons said. “While the rioters attacked the agents of the law and the federal ICE in the streets of Los Angeles, Mayor Bass stood on the side of chaos and the illegality on the application of the law.”

Lyons’ Statement Went on To Say: “Our Brave Officers were Vastly Outnumbered, As over 1,000 Rioters Surrouted and Attacked to Federal Building. It Took Over Two Hours for The Los Angeles Police Department to Respond, Loosit Being Called Multiple Times. Angeles Criminal Arresting Illegal Aliens Including Gang Members, Drug Traffickers and Phose with A History of Assault, Cruelty to Children, Domestic Violence, Robbery, and smuggled.

The LAPD issued a statement later on Saturday denying the claims of the director of ICE, saying that his response was delayed, in part, because the federal authorities had deployed chemical irritating in the multitude of protesters.

“Contrary to the statement that LAPD delayed his response for more than two hours, our staff mobilized and acted as quickly as the conditions permitted safely,” said the statement. “Our response time was affected by a significant congestion of traffic, the presence of protesters and, in particular, due to the fact that federal agents had unfolded irritating to the crowd before the arrival of LAPD. This created a dangerous environment for the officers who responded. Within the 55 minutes of receiving the call, we began to disperse the hostile and unknown crowd.”

Bass has condemned ice operations in its city.

“As mayor of a proud city of immigrants, which contribute to our city in many ways, I am deeply angry at what has taken place. These tactics sow terror in our communities and interrupt the basic principles of security in our city. My office is in close coordination with the community organizations of immigrants. We will not defend this,” Bass said.

Bass told ABC Los Angeles Kabc station that neither she nor the Los Angeles Police Department knew that the ice raids were going to happen.

Large crowds began to meet near the Federal Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles on Friday afternoon, protesting immigration raids and leading some clashes with the authorities. You could see some protesters throwing objects to vehicles, and others tried to prevent the trucks from leaving on Friday, Kabc reported.

Shortly after 7 PM, the Los Angeles Police Department declared an illegal assembly, warning the protesters who risked to be arrested if they remained in the area. LAPD officers were seen to align the streets near the Federal Building, Kabc reported.

The LAPD said in a social media post on Friday night that the officers had reported that a “small group of violent people” was launching large concrete pieces.

“Once again, an illegal assembly has been declared. You must abandon the area. The use of less lethal ammunition has been authorized by the incident commander,” the LAPD said in the position.

The National Security Department said that police orientation in Los Angeles is “despicable.”

“Mayor Bass, ICE is not responsible for ‘sowing a sense of terror’ that the protesters they had allowed,” said DHS.
